1st Generation Parent Engagement

Many parents are unfamiliar with the process of applying to college in today's fast paced world. Every person who is the first in a family to graduate from college has the potential to lift that family permanently out of poverty.

Developing a parent engagement policy or plan does not have to be a complex activity. There are many ways and tools to accomplish the task.

Using data retrieved from schools across the U.S., we compiled a quick list of innovative parent engagement practices for improving college planning, preparation, access and success.  In addition, The Hechinger Report explores how colleges can boost graduation rates of first-generation college students by building relationships with the students’ parents.

We hope this information is useful in supporting parent engagement efforts in your school or community.
